Sonos and Ikea are at it again with speakers that sound like other things. They recently launched the second generation of Symfonisk table lamp speaker.

The Symfonisk line of speakers, which also includes a bookshelf speaker that can hold books and a picture frame speaker that looks like a mural, is designed to blend in with your home décor.

Symphony table lamp headset

Sonos designed its second-generation table lamp, bookshelf, and picture frame sound systems to bring high-quality wireless sound into your home décor, while eliminating the need to take up space with standalone speakers.

For the new table lamp speaker, Sonos said it’s enhanced the audio experience, updated some features and added customizable designs. It has fixed some shortcomings of the original table lamp amplifier, which was introduced in 2019.

The table lamp’s first speaker design featured a round knob that looked like it should have been a dimmer or volume knob. But it was just a power button. The new one has a clear power button. And the original amplifier took the E12 bulb size only. The new device uses the more popular and brighter E26.

You can use a smart bulb with Symfonisk table lamp speaker to turn on the light with a voice command. And with this generation, you can choose from colors and materials.

Separate base and shade options

With the new table lamp, the base and lamp shade are sold separately and offer a choice of colors and materials. You can choose from a black or white version of the lamp base, and you can choose from four different lamp shades in either fabric or glass, and also in black or white.

As Alistair Luther of IKEA said:

Since the launch of our first Symfonisk desk lamp headset, we’ve learned a lot about how and where to use them. For example, a lot of people use a lamp amplifier on a nightstand, which led us to create a new lamp base that’s a bit smaller. We are now offering customers more design options to better suit their individual tastes and styles. By incorporating a speaker into a table lamp, we can save space, reduce clutter and allow people to customize the ambiance in their homes through light and sound.

Changes in technology too

But the Symfonisk table lamp’s second-generation speaker updates are more than cosmetic. Sonos said the new headlight amplifier features an all-new acoustic engineering that uses a custom waveguide to deliver high-quality sound from any angle.

Like the original version of the speaker, it streams audio over Wi-Fi instead of Bluetooth, which could mean more stable playback. You can power the table lamp speaker on its own or connect it to other Sonos products, including other Symfonisk products.

All Symfonisk speakers are part of the Sonos platform, easily connecting listeners to more than 100 streaming services like Apple Music, Spotify, Amazon Music and Deezer, as well as TuneIn radio stations, podcasts, and your iTunes music library.

the price: $140.99 for speaker base; $189.99 with shade
